Blogaholics – Good or Bad?
A Blogaholic is generally defined as a person who is addicted to his blog. Blogaholics are like drug addicts or alcoholics. As you might have guessed, and correctly, blogaholics are addicted to their blogs. They can’t live without their blogs. Their blogs are all blogaholics eat, drink, sleep and dream about.
Now, before we go ahead, let’s take a look at some of the signs of blogaholics. Do you have any of the symptoms?
- They spend all of their
onlinetime blogging. - They are perfectionists. Even a little design flaw will make them restless until it is fixed.
- Their life revolve around their blogs: They eat, drink, and sleep their blogs (literally!).
- They search in everything inspiration for a new post.
- Ask why they blog, and you’ll get strange looks.
- They don’t read blogs out of their niche.
Let me state here that a blogaholic may have all or some of the above symptoms, and some normal bloggers might also have them, but not in extremities. Just like there are advantages and disadvantages of everything, there are advantages and disadvantages of being a ‘blogaholic’. Let’s take a look at them.

Advantages of being a blogaholic
One of the greatest advantages of being a blogaholic is that you always aim to improve it and correct any error it may have. This is where a blogaholic gets the edge over a non-blogaholic blogger. A normal blogger might not care whether there are mistakes or flaws in the design or spelling mistakes in their posts. As a result, the overall quality of the blog goes down. But a blogaholic will strive to make his design and posts error free, thus improving their blog’s quality.
Also, blogaholics can produce more content and new ideas than normal bloggers since they read almost every blog in their niche. They have a passion for what they blog about, and that’s the reason they happily spend hours reading away stuff that normal bloggers would find boring. If you don’t have the passion and interest in something, you can’t succeed in it.
Disadvantages of being a blogaholic
Now we come to the disadvantages of being a blogaholic.
Firstly, they lose out on important things other than blogging, like family, children, friends, etc. They don’t go out much for some fresh air or with friends for entertainment. They’re glued to their screens. Their blogs are their best friend, spouse, children, everything. Blogaholics, like alcoholics or drug addicts, slowly ruin their lives because of heavy addiction. Backaches, eye aches, headaches, exhaustion and other medical problems are common with blogaholics.
Also, blogaholics may seem to be producing good quality content at first, but slowly the quality of their content decreases because they don’t allow their mind enough time to think up of new ideas. Since they expose themselves to the same thing for long periods of time, their mind gets stuck in that same thing, and is not able to think. And because they’re always in their blogs, they can’t think up of new ideas: they’ll post about the same thing day in and day out. Begin sunrise, the computer’s switched on. Begin sunrise the next day, the computer’s still switched on.
It’s very important to sometimes switch off the screen, and do something else than blogging. This way, you don’t restrict your mind to thinking in just one direction (ie, your blog). There are other important responsibilities that you have to fulfill (like family, self) and if you’re always in your blog, you just make a complete mess of your life.
So, what do I think. I must say that you do have to show a lot of care and respect to your blog (like finding and fixing flaws and errors), and strive to improve it, to make it better. Therefore, you have to have some of the qualities of blogaholics in you. But don’t become a complete blogaholic. Anything, if done in extremes, can cause harm. So, leave some time for other things too, and don’t always be stuck to your screen. This way, you’ll be able to balance yourself between two extremes.
So, what’s your say in this?

Blogaholics don’t read blogs outside their niches? I don’t think so. They might be reading thousands of blogs out there just because they are blogaholics.
wayne – I guess blogaholics don’t have the TIME to read blogs outside their niche! They’re so you know enmeshed in their own blogs and niche.
Siyab, i think they visit blogs of all kinda niches but blogaholics just try to implement most of the things in their own blog.
They visit another blog, and think like “If this was implemented in my blog?” etc. etc.
This is what i feel about them.
I came here from john chow and really liked your post, though some of your words, i don’t agree but most of them are true.
what is blogaholic? by the way? is it addiction to blog?
I would say, Internet Addiction !!! in broad term
never mind, you better stay away from your screen, brother
I can feel, it’s your own experiences that you are putting here, i bet on that. Because, I give 2 hours a day for net and most of the time, I spent reading others content
navin – internet addiction is a very general term. It encompasses many things, such as news sites, sports sites, gaming, etc. But I guess since many blogs cover news and stuff, it can be called Internet Addiction!
And oh I think you are right – I do need to give my self some time off!
Navin, Blogaholism is different from Internet Addiction..
Don’t get confused with it.
chetan – if blogging is all you do on the internet, then it can be called internet addiction, i guess. But still, blogaholism is a very specific word and is different from IA (internet addiction)
I may like to remark differently
Internet Addiction is the father of all kind of addictions that’s somehow related to being into online connectivity, including blog addiction.
And, I don’t believe in this word ‘Blogaholism’ which I doubt ever exists rather I’m comfortable to write as “Blog addiction” is not different from Internet addiction. I would love to say, it’s a part of Internet Addiction.
Just give it a series of hierarchy and I’m pretty much sure, you’d get clear cut understanding.
Abstract:
It’d be insane to say sugar doesn’t come from sugarcane but from Sugar box.
navin – I agree internet addiction is the father of all addictions (how silly does that sound!), but you gotta be general.
For example, there’s drug addiction and alcohol addiction. why not put them all in the general term of ‘drug addiction’? Afterall, alochol too is a kind of a drug
Why keep them as drug AND alcohol addiction?
And I agree ‘blogaholism’ isn’t a word, but if ‘alcoholism’ can be a word, why not ‘blogaholism’? Wait a few years and it’ll probably be included in the English Language (like Google was after 6 or 7 years)
Alcohol and drug, they are different things, Muhammad !!! if we start to see it with the perspective of life, then there would be so many kinds of addiction that you may want to put in one place, which is not good thing to do, because, they are different. eg. Sex addition, smoke addiction,coin-collecting addition, stamp collecting addiction, Money addiction blah blha blah
BUT.. Internet?? it’s one, being online.. no matter what we do online, it’ll be regarded as online. Blog addiction, chat addiction, forum addiction whatever addiction it is, it’s an online addiction or say, an Internet addiction
and regarding your view on this new terms about blogger getting into dictionary, I agree on that
btw, How’s your school going on?? John chow said, you’re 14 years old talented blogger? Is he right or am I wrong??
Navin’s last blog post..Are you MALE or FEMALE??
Navin – If you’re being specific, it’s blog addiction. If you’re been general, it’s internet addiction. And what if some people ONLY do blogging on the internet (no other stuff like entertainment, etc), then? I know this is an extreme example, but still
But I don’t seee anything here to argue to waste time about! Both seem good!
Well school’s pretty good. I’m not 14, but 15 and going on to 16 on March 8th. (so less than a month left till my birthday!). And I’m really stressed out at school at present and would DEFINITELY accept guest posts!
I think I am becoming a reluctant blogaholic. I don’t want to be writing all day and/or thinking about my blog. I do, however, want to provide content that keeps people coming back and I’m starting to get a bit obsessive about that.
Ty Brown’s last blog post..Posting for Technorati
