Do You Blog For Money or For Fun?

Yo there! If you are new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed, or through email, for more tips on better and effective blogging!

The popularity of blogs has simply exploded in the last few years. I would say they are growing even faster than cell-division!

As blogs are growing in popularity, with more and more people creating their own blogs, the monetization and make-money-online potential and desirability has exploded too. Every now and then a new advertising network with radical ideas opens up. Bloggers are flocking to get themselves signed up with this ad network and that affiliate network.

So, essentially, more and more bloggers are now looking to earn money from their blogs.

As more and more bloggers look for opportunities for making money online from their blogs, an important question arises: Is it more important to blog for money than blog for fun?

In the early days of blogging, there weren’t many ways you could make money from blogs, and people blogged for fun. They posted when they felt like it and posted what

One thing leads to another. You start a blog to blog about what’s your passion. Slowly, your blog builds up and you start to get monetization opportunities.

they wanted to. In other words, there was complete freedom. They didn’t have to follow stringent posting schedules and quality guidelines. Secondly, there weren’t many people who let alone read not even knew what blogs were. So the audience was also pretty small back then.In other words, blogging was considered a relaxation activity one could do after a hard day’s work or after chores or too kill boredom. People didn’t make much money from them because back then there weren’t many advertising agencies. Almost all businesses were the brick-and-mortar type. You know what I mean, right?

Fast forward to today. So many advertising networks and make-money-online opportunities and inspired by the success stories of a handful of bloggers, many bloggers jumped onto the make-money-online bandwagon, converting their for-fun blogs into money generating machines. In other words, they turned their passion for blogging into a business which earned them money. Therefore they stopped blogging for fun and started blogging for money. The passion is still there, but it’s not really for the fun of it.

What was once a relaxation activity has now turned into a full time business. Man, people have quit their jobs to take up blogging and are earning from them!

So, in other words, such people have turned their blogging in to a sophisticated business. They have to follow stringent posting schedules(at least in the beginning), manage relationships with advertisers and advertising agencies, and so on. For if they don’t do this, their blog will soon be dead and the money will stop rolling in! So it’s a continuous and often arduously tedious job.

If one is blogging for the money, it is imperative that he/she has a firm determination, patience and fierce perseverance and be able to keep going

no matter what happens. This is very important in the beginning. Unfortunately, most bloggers don’t gear up properly and in the face of failure, they fall to their blogging deaths and their blogging days are over.

It also requires that you have the willingness to blog. You can’t make a student learn something he/she doesn’t like. If you don’t like to blog, it’s no use doing so. Starting up your own blog just to make money just to join the make money online bandwagon isn’t very good nor practical if you don’t have the willingness for it.

Also, you have to compete like fighting lions with other bloggers in your niche to gain the upper hand in traffic share. And it’s not very sustainable,
(at least not in the beginning). You can’t just sit there after getting the larger share of traffic. The others are gonna come at you like ferocious hungry

Inspired by the success stories of a handful of bloggers, many bloggers jumped onto the make-money-online bandwagon, converting their for-fun blogs into money generating machines.

lions, and you’ll have to defend your share. Exhaustive and tedious and time consuming. Once again, not for the one who isn’t in it for the long haul. It’s not short term by any means. It’s long term, very long term. Of course, there are exceptions, but not many.

On the other hand, blogging for fun doesn’t require the brutal schedule and all the work a for-money blogger has to do. You don’t care about the competition, heck you’re just blogging for the fun of it! You don’t care who wants to advertise on your blog. Let them come to you instead of you going to them! You’ll build up a loyal share of supporters and readers who like what you blog about as time passes. As I mentioned earlier, there’s no schedule you have to fulfill. Blog when you feel like it and blog about what you want to write about.

But blogging for fun isn’t without its disadvantages and downsides. Firstly, you don’t get much money for doing what you’re doing. Secondly, you might not have a very big share in the traffic pie: you might be an unknown blogger. And so on. But for the person who is not in for the money or the traffic it’s not a thing to fuss over.

One thing that is very important is that one thing leads to another. You start a blog to blog about what’s your passion. You’re blogging for fun. Slowly, your blog builds up and you start to get monetization opportunities. Only after a long time does your blog enter mainstream money making. So, it starts with the passion for blogging about what you love, you can’t go straight to blogging for money, your blog will die sooner than later!

I’m not heavily with either side here. I blog both for the fun and for the money. If I had been blogging for the fun of it, there wouldn’t have been advertisements here. I try to keep a balance here. I don’t let my passion for blogging die out, and, at the same time, I don’t let monetization opportunities get away. So, it’s important to keep a balance here.

So, after this long and seemingly nonsense lecture from me, what do you think? Do you blog for money or for fun?

    I will say both.
For fun because one can put life in his/her blog not just by writing dry and boring topics, but by create meaningful content with some humor juice :)
For money because one is giving his/her precious time to blog. It is not an easy job and thats why, should not be done for free. It doesn’t mean that we should ask to people for money, catch customers from one hand and advertisers from other, and interact both. Satisfy customer and advertiser and put some bucks to yourself for paying bills :D
